This chateau is situated in beautiful French countryside, ideal for those who love to walk or just relax. Our hosts, Bev and Elaine, were on hand to give us a warm welcome and to provide us with everything that we needed for our stay, including useful local knowledge.
The chateau was spacious enough for privacy but was arranged in such a way that it was easy to socialise with fellow guests. We had four teenage girls with us and the volleyball and badminton courts together with the pool kept them more than occupied for a fortnight. We should also mention that trips to the shops at Bordeaux and Angouleme went down well.
We enjoyed exploring the many local markets and supermarkets and cooking our own food.
We would happily recommend this rental home and hope to stay there again one day.

Labaurie is the prefect retreat for a family wanting to get away from the hustle and bustle of city life. The photographs on the website simply can't do it justice. The chateau is stunning and you feel the history from the moment you step through the entrance gate. A evening walk around the property, the setting sun reflecting on the honey-coloured stone, gave us huge delight. The kids explored the acres and acres of garden with a freedom they'd never enjoyed before. They picked blackberries, fed the horses and spotted bright green spiders in the piles of wood. They spent hours in the gorgeous pool and tried their hand at table tennis and volleyball. They'd stuff themselves silly with plums from Elaine and Bev's garden. At dusk we'd eat in the courtyard of this splendid building and feel very privileged. The apartments are well equipped and comfortable, the decoration sympathetic to the chateau's history. There are a host of places to visit locally and fabulous markets to enjoy. The wine region is on the doorstep. For the kids there is kayaking, tennis, riding and much more. We spent days at the great river beach at nearby Aubeterre and visiting the awe-inspiring monolithic church. You can't run out of things to do.
Elaine and Bev are a lovely couple and made us very feel very welcome. We warmed to them immediately
and hope to return to Labaurie soon. We are very pleased to recommend this wonderful holiday

"We had the most wonderful stay at Labaurie and a most welcoming reception throughout our stay. I would highly recommend Labaurie for someone who is ready to unwind and relax in the tranquil setting of the estate"

The chateau and grounds are the perfect embodiment of France. The Joli Coin was simple and clean with everything we needed for a comfortable stay. Bev & Elaine had thought of everything to entertain lively children (large pool, badminton/volley ball nets, football pitch & undercover tabel tennis/darts with all equipment) and energetic adults or to allow those who wished it peace, tranquility & relaxation. They are friendly and helpful hosts who are there if needed but do not intrude. We had a fabulous time and sincerely hope to return

First impressions are very good the Chateau overlooks the main road and the instructions for getting up the hill and into the driveway were good (sometimes these will drive you mad if they are wrong as you are always tired after the drive) The property was very clean and well presented and the TV worked for UK sat as in the brochure. When there was problem as minor shortage in the kitchen our hosts (Elain and Mr Bev) addressed it straight away. There was plenty of Sun beds out side each unit facing the pool and lot more actually around the pools edge. You must try the food at the local Chateau recommended by Elaine the food was excellent and very good value(and the owner speaks good english also 50% of there patroons are UK people)The village of Aubeterre is close by a visit to St Emmillon is a must. we only had time to go to Bordeaux for one day you musy try the Park and ride is so good a very cheap

Chateau de Labaurie is so beautifully situated on the edge of Chalais in extensive grounds, which have been developed beautifully into a tranquil location. All of our very large family enjoyed the use of the pool and it was so nice to share it with other families who were on holiday there too, which kept everyone happy. The site is small enough to be peaceful, but large enough not to feel isolated - for us, a perfect combination! The Chateau is also well located to visit the local markets and we particularly enjoyed a canoe ride along the river from Aubeterre and some nearby lake beaches. We can highly recommend the Chateau de Labaurie as a relaxed place to take your family away on holiday.

''Most wonderful holiday ever, we loved the peace and dreamlike quality of the place. Hope to come back next year' Therse and Jamie.

Place was well equipped, a bit out of town, but not a hike. The facilites enable you to decide how energetic you wish to be, swimming pool, table tennis or badminton all available as also a couple of mountain bikes. Town was fine for a Friday night drink in the square with plenty of entertainment and places to eat. We enjoyed it, came back relaxed and both Bev & Elaine were marvellous hosts, that could not do enough for their guests. Recommend the place to anyone with or without family, plenty to do nearby or a little further a field." Sorry about the delay just got the internet up and working again and managed to catch up on my work e-mails.      Many thanks for the quick return of the cheque that was much appreciated.  We all enjoyed the holiday if not the driving there and back.  We returned back to the UK refreshed and relaxed after staying at your place.  The location is superb and the weather really was good to us.  We enjoyed the freedom to explore not only around the Chateau but also the land adjacent.  We could do as much as we wanted or as little!

So, good luck with all your endeavours and we do hope to see you again soon

Review Title : 1097994 - "Summer memories of a french family " "Elaine and Bev Holden have warmly welcome our family in five (!!!) of their chalets of Château de Labaurie between 1st and 15th of August. We have enjoyed the large views on the woods, vineyards, and fields all around the château, the swimming pool in the middle of the chalets, also the individual barbecues, and mostly the peaceful atmosphere of the château... Chalais is in the heart of a splendid region: Charente and Dordogne, with lovely small cities (Aubeterre, Brantôme...). We have already recommended the address to many of our friends. If they choose to spend some holidays in Château de Labaurie, I am sure that they will keep the same excellent impression. Thank you again, Elaine and Bev. "

Dear Elaine & Bev,

We would both like to thank you for providing us with a wonderful base at Maison du Bucheron to explore the region around Chalais.

The welcome you both gave us was what we would expect from people from "up-north".

The accommodation was excellent, as was the whole site of the Chateau de Labaurie.

We walked into Chalais on the Monday morning to sample the market and on Tuesday we visited the village of Aubeterre-sur-Drone, both very nice places to spend time at.

On the Thursday we drove to Libourne and St-Emilion, and spent a lot of time looking at the sites and also all the numerous shops and vineyards trying to sell us their wine. Too much choice really.

All the other days were spent around the Maison/Chalais soaking up the clear air/sun. The swimming pool was very welcome on those days, kept very clean and tidy.

Our journey to and from the Chateau allowed us to spend time at Tours, Angouleme, Angers and Caen, which helped us to enjoy the holiday even more.

Once again many thanks, and maybe we will see you both again sometime in the near future?

Best regards

Roger & Barbara

"We couldn't believe how far we'd travelled to find our host was originally from our home town, Bev and Elaine are wonderful hosts who make you feel so welcome and are on hand if you have any queries/problems, but leave you to get on with your holiday. The setting of the chateau is second to none and when you see it from the roadway you think "wow", this has been worth the long drive. We stayed in Le Marechal Ferrant the first cottage on the right, it had a private garden with sun beds, table and chairs and bbq. The four of us really enjoyed the privacy but enjoyed sharing the swimming pool with other families. The surrounding area is lovely and Chalais is only a 20 minute walk away. The chateau on the other hill is also a must for exploring. Cognac, Lebourne, Aubetere and the surrounding countryside is a must to see. We hope to visit again soon. "

"First of all we had no expectations whatsoever and kept an open mind only knowing that what we needed was rest, good food and no stress. We came to the perfect spot! The Chateau de Labaurie is a wonderful holiday location and for us it was just what we needed and more. We had the luxury of leaving our kids at home and enjoyed the time to ourselves amongst the beautiful surroundings and this magnificent property owned by it's warm and hospitable owners, Bev and Elaine Holden.

We stayed in one of the cottages and it was comfortable, cosy and all the basic amenities one needs in a self contained set up while on holiday and the pool was divine.

The locals from the Chalais area and surrounding were friendly, helpful and in general hospitable people.

We are definitely coming back next summer if not sooner. Thank you for making our holiday a perfect one.

The Green Family:

We very much enjoyed our second visit to Chateau Labaurie, having been there for the first time in 2009. If you want a relaxing week in a beautiful setting then this is the place for you. It is perfect for families with young children as there are acres of space for them to roam around. Our boys were never short of things to do - table tennis, swimming and football to name but a few. Bev and Elaine are very welcoming. The price is extremely competitive. I cannot recommend Labaurie highly enough.

Review Date of stay Katy D :

Good size Gite on a beautiful site with lots of sleeping space and everything you need for a lovely holiday. Facilities on the site are amazing with a great (if cold) pool plus masses of space for the kids to run around and enjoy the games available. Really friendly welcome from the owners who were available if you needed them. It's a little outside the town of Chalais (30-40 min walk into town) but Lidl is very close for daily bread runs. Had a great holiday;

We stayed here as part of our larger family attending a wedding nearby, but the gites are well spaced out to all have your own space if required, Le Joli Coin gite in particular has beautiful views across the pool to the Chateau. Two bedrooms, both with ensuite bathrooms was ideal, living area spacious and facilities good. Gardens and pool area beautiful, clear night skies made star gazing a must. Enjoyed wake boarding on local lake and kayaking in Aubuterre sur dronne. Very quiet area.
